The law offices of Jewell & Jewell enjoy a long and proud history of providing legal services and representation to the people of Pointe Coupee Parish and surrounding areas. In 1931, Joseph Thomas (“Tom”) Jewell earned his license to practice law in Louisiana following graduation from L.S.U. Law School, and he established a law office in his hometown of New Roads. In 1934, Tom’s younger brother, Joseph Philibert (“J. P.”) Jewell, Jr., likewise graduated from L.S.U. Law School and was admitted to the Louisiana bar. Francis Douglas (“Doug”) Jewell followed in the footsteps of his older brothers in 1950 when he, too, completed L.S.U. Law School. In 1968, J. P.’s son, John Wayne Jewell, graduated from L.S.U. Law School and joined the family law practice, at which time the partnership of Jewell & Jewell was established.
For many years, the Jewell attorneys maintained offices on the top floor of a prominent commercial building in the shadow of the Pointe Coupee Parish courthouse. In 1974, Jewell & Jewell moved to its present location just around the corner in downtown New Roads. John Wayne’s son, Stephen Philibert Jewell, graduated from L.S.U. Law School in 1994 and, after serving a one-year clerkship at the Louisiana Supreme Court in New Orleans, returned home to New Roads to join the family law practice. For three generations, Jewell & Jewell has proudly served our community, providing a complete range of legal services, along with a title insurance agency which handles real estate transactions and mortgage loan closings. Today, John Wayne and Stephen continue the firm’s practice.
